Staff Software Engineer (Embedded C++)

Location: London, UK; at least 4 days per week onsite at the Kings Cross office, with one flexible work-from-home day

What you will do

• Design, implement, and maintain high-performance embedded and real-time C++ software, including hardware abstraction layers, device drivers, and data acquisition pipelines.
• Define the long-term embedded architecture strategy and address cross-team dependencies and technical debt.
• Communicate architectural decisions across Product, Clinical, Regulatory, electronics, and FPGA teams.
• Support hardware bring-up, hardware-software integration, system integration, and complex debugging.
• Mentor engineers and promote technical excellence, code quality, and professional development.
• Lead code reviews, testing, design reviews, risk management, and software documentation under the medical device quality system.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience focused on systems-level software architecture.
• Deep expertise in modern C++17 or later, including memory management, concurrency, real-time constraints, and performance optimization.
• Experience with embedded Linux, device drivers, hardware abstraction, FPGA or microcontroller interfaces, communication buses, and real-time operating systems.
• Experience in a regulated industry and familiarity with IEC 62304 or equivalent software development standards.
• Ability to write clean, well-tested, maintainable software for safety-critical systems.
• Ability to work at least 4 days per week from the London office.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-speed data acquisition or real-time signal processing pipelines.
• Optical or biomedical hardware integration experience.
• Exposure to data science or ML pipelines and their software interfaces.
• Experience with embedded CI/CD, automated testing, and static analysis tools.
• Knowledge of IEC 60601-1-4, cloud-based IoT architecture, or health-tech data residency.
