Malware Research Intern (Cybersecurity)

What you will do

• Perform threat hunting using security publications, news sources, and data resources to identify new or active malware threats.
• Reverse-engineer malware samples and analyze malware network traffic to identify communication mechanisms.
• Develop Snort signatures and document malware behavior and detection strategies.
• Communicate research results to customers, team members, and management.
• Collaborate with researchers to improve malware analysis and response processes.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Security, or a related field.
• Interest in malware analysis and threat hunting, demonstrated through personal projects or self-directed learning.
• Ability to analyze and describe complex application behaviors with strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
• Proficient English communication skills, written and oral, are required.
• Ability to work collaboratively and with minimal supervision.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems, reverse engineering, debugging tools such as IDA Pro and Ghidra, and encryption or obfuscation techniques.
• Knowledge of C/C++ or assembly language, TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, and SMB.
• Familiarity with Snort, Wireshark, Windows Sysinternals, VMware, and scripting languages such as Python, Ruby, Perl, JavaScript, PowerShell, or Bash.
