TL;DR
Motor Control Firmware Engineer (Robotics): Developing and owning the motor control firmware that drives actuators in personal home robots with an accent on brushless motor control, sensing, calibration, and real-time embedded systems. Focus on implementing field-oriented control and current, speed, and position loops, bringing up custom hardware, and enabling force-sensitive, compliant motion under dynamic loads.

Location: Redwood City, California, United States; on-site

Company

hirify.global is developing personal home robots designed to automate repetitive household tasks and make generalized robots broadly accessible.

What you will do

  • Own motor control firmware end-to-end from prototype through production.
  • Design and tune firmware for brushless actuators, including field-oriented control and current, speed, and position control loops.
  • Bring up and debug custom motor-control hardware, boards, sensors, encoders, and current/voltage measurement systems.
  • Build sensing, calibration, filtering, and synchronization pipelines for reliable control feedback.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, controls, product, and machine-learning engineers to enable force-sensitive and compliant control under dynamic loads.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of real-time embedded software development involving architecture, microcontrollers, drivers, and libraries.
  • Strong proficiency in embedded C/C++ and real-time constraints, timers, ADCs, PWMs, DMA, and non-volatile memory.
  • Hands-on knowledge of motor control theory, including field-oriented control and dq transforms.
  • Experience with encoders and current sensors, including calibration, filtering, and synchronization.
  • Ability to read schematics and layouts, bring up new boards, debug cross-functional issues, and work with I2C, SPI, UART, RS-485, CAN FD, Ethernet, or EtherCAT.

Nice to have

  • Delivered a project from prototype to production.
  • Experience with RTOS concepts, scheduling, interrupt handling, and real-time guarantees.
  • Python experience for scripting, data analysis, or test automation.
  • Cross-disciplinary experience in system architecture, protocol selection, or ML-driven control pipelines.

Culture & Benefits

  • Opportunity to join an early EE and firmware team working on home robotics.
  • Collaboration across electrical, mechanical, machine-learning, controls, and product disciplines.
  • Inclusive, diverse working environment.
  • Equal opportunity employment regardless of legally protected characteristics.
