TL;DR
Embedded Firmware Engineer (Robotics) (C/C++/EtherCAT): Building low-level firmware for deterministic real-time motion control across humanoid robot platforms with an accent on sub-millisecond synchronization, distributed controllers, and safety-critical embedded systems. Focus on optimizing RTOS scheduling, interrupt and DMA paths, EtherCAT communication, actuator control, and hardware-in-the-loop validation.
Location: Mountain View, United States
Salary: $150K–$225K per year, plus equity
Company
develops generalist intelligent humanoid robots across the hardware, robot systems, infrastructure, foundation models, and manufacturing stack.
What you will do
- Develop and maintain low-level firmware for real-time motion-control nodes across humanoid robot platforms.
- Design deterministic communication and synchronization layers over EtherCAT, targeting sub-millisecond cycle times.
- Select and tune RTOS configurations, optimize scheduling, interrupts, DMA paths, watchdogs, and recovery mechanisms.
- Implement safety mechanisms including Safe Torque Off, watchdogs, and heartbeat monitoring.
- Collaborate with Electronics, Controls, and Systems teams on timing budgets, data interfaces, HAL architecture, and actuator-control APIs.
- Build unit, hardware-in-the-loop, and integration tests; support actuator and sensor-board bring-up, debugging, and design reviews.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
- At least 2 years of embedded firmware development experience for real-time control systems.
- Proficiency in C/C++ and low-level debugging with JTAG, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
- Experience with microcontroller firmware on ARM Cortex-M or similar architectures and with RTOS platforms such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr.
- Experience with low-level interfaces including I2C, SPI, Ethernet, USB, CAN, UART, PWM, ADC, and sensor interfaces.
- Demonstrated ability to ship reliable, maintainable embedded software for safety-critical, real-time products.
Nice to have
- Embedded Linux, BSP development, Linux kernel programming, device trees, Kconfig, drivers, or kernel modules.
- GMSL2 and MIPI-CSI2 camera drivers using V4L2.
- Field-Oriented Control implementation for BLDC motor drives.
- Yocto Project and BitBake experience.
Culture & Benefits
- Work across the full robotics stack, from hardware and robot systems to AI infrastructure and foundation models.
- Join a heavily funded robotics company that has raised over $450 million.
- Full-time employment with equity compensation.
- Opportunity to grow from an MTS role with a clear progression path.
