Machine Learning Research Manager (Healthcare AI)

What you will do

• Manage and mentor a small team of applied and clinical researchers.
• Set research priorities, remove blockers, and establish high-trust, high-accountability ways of working.
• Guide problem framing, experimental design, evaluation strategy, and technical tradeoff decisions as a player-coach.
• Partner with radiologists, clinical experts, engineers, and product leaders to identify research opportunities and bring them into production.
• Build and evaluate advanced NLP and reasoning systems for clinical text, diagnostic criteria, reporting workflows, and healthcare data.
• Improve research quality, reproducibility, communication, and adoption of relevant machine learning methods.

Requirements

• MS or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computational Linguistics, Biomedical Informatics, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 6+ years of applied machine learning research experience with evidence of delivering production impact.
• People management experience or experience leading multi-person research efforts, including coaching and prioritization.
• Strong background in NLP, modern deep learning, transformer-based systems, and large language models.
• Hands-on experience with PyTorch and modern machine learning development workflows.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience in healthcare, clinical AI, biomedical machine learning, or other regulated and privacy-sensitive environments.
• Experience with radiology, clinical documentation, medical terminology, or clinician-facing workflows.
• Experience deploying LLM or NLP systems in production.
• Experience contributing to research culture through mentorship, technical standards, or organizational leadership.
• Familiarity with cloud-based machine learning workflows and modern research infrastructure.
