TL;DR
Thermal Engineer, Turbomachinery (Advanced Nuclear Energy): Developing thermal designs for rotating and static turbomachinery components in a high-temperature nuclear power conversion system with an accent on operating temperature limits, thermal isolation, and insulation strategies. Focus on defining turbine blade temperatures for creep and stress rupture analysis, reducing waste heat losses, and shaping early system architecture in an ambiguous startup environment.

Location: Torrance, California, United States; onsite

Salary: $140,000–$215,000 USD per year

Company

Develops scalable, factory-made high-temperature nuclear power systems for industrial energy, hydrogen, and next-generation manufacturing.

What you will do

  • Analyze rotating and static turbomachinery components to define maximum operating temperatures.
  • Develop thermal isolation strategies that keep components below their operating limits.
  • Define turbine blade operating temperatures for creep and stress rupture life calculations.
  • Design insulation strategies for the power conversion system to minimize waste heat losses.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to define high-efficiency, highly producible cycle designs.
  • Influence turbomachinery and system architecture decisions as an early member of the team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • At least 3 years of experience in thermal analysis of complex rotating components.
  • Experience with a finite element thermal analysis tool such as Ansys Thermal.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
  • Ability to work across aerodynamic, structural, manufacturing, and turbomachinery design perspectives.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Experience with turbomachinery in a design or test environment.
  • Experience with conjugate heat transfer analysis or heat exchanger design.
  • Experience with supercritical CO2.
  • Experience analyzing turbomachinery at the component design level.

Culture & Benefits

  • Equity ownership in a rapidly growing advanced energy startup.
  • Comprehensive medical benefits and unlimited paid time off.
  • Free daily lunch and dinner provided onsite.
  • Generous PPE stipend.
  • High autonomy, significant ownership, rapid career growth, and direct collaboration with experienced engineers, operators, and industry leaders.
