TL;DR
Thermal Engineer (Aerospace): Designing and validating thermal solutions for high-mach aircraft, including thermal protection, heat shields, insulation, active cooling, and hot metallic structures with an accent on heat transfer analysis, high-temperature materials, and thermal system integration. Focus on modeling thermal loads during Mach 3+ flight, reducing thermally induced stress and deflections, and validating robust solutions through laboratory and flight testing.

Location: Los Angeles, CA; on-site. The role requires compliance with U.S. export controls: the hire must be a U.S. person or otherwise eligible for deemed export licensing.

Salary: $91,800–$140,250 per year

Company

hirify.global is a venture-backed defense aviation company developing high-speed aircraft through rapid iterative hardware prototyping.

What you will do

  • Analyze heat transfer, thermal loads, and thermal behavior throughout Mach 3+ flight using thermal analysis software and computational tools.
  • Design thermal management systems, including heat shields, thermal protection materials, insulation, and active cooling systems.
  • Evaluate high-temperature materials, alloys, and thermal protection solutions for hypersonic environments.
  • Analyze and test methods for reducing thermally induced stress and deflections in hot metallic structures.
  • Integrate thermal solutions with aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, and materials engineering teams.
  • Plan and evaluate laboratory and flight thermal tests, document results, and communicate design recommendations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, thermal engineering, or a related field; a master’s degree is advantageous.
  • Proficiency with thermal analysis software and computational tools such as ANSYS, CFD, and Thermal Desktop.
  • Experience in thermal engineering, heat transfer analysis, or thermal management systems, preferably in aerospace or high-speed vehicles.
  • Strong understanding of aerospace materials, high-temperature alloys, and material behavior under extreme thermal conditions.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Must meet U.S. export control requirements as a U.S. person or be eligible for deemed export licensing.

Nice to have

  • Experience with collegiate engineering competition teams such as Formula SAE, Design/Build/Fly, Baja SAE, rocketry, or comparable hands-on organizations.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced research and development environment.

Culture & Benefits

  • Employer-paid healthcare and pet insurance.
  • Competitive pay, stock options, a 401(k) plan, and potential year-end bonuses.
  • Paid parental leave, 12 federal holidays, and PTO programs.
  • Weekly paid office lunches and stocked breakrooms.
