TL;DR
Patient Access Specialist (Healthcare): Performing patient admissions, registration, insurance verification, medical necessity checks, and point-of-service collections at a hospital with an accent on accurate account setup, compliance documentation, and compassionate patient service. Focus on screening medical necessity, processing insurance and physician orders, explaining consent and Medicare forms, and auditing accounts for clean claims.

Location: Onsite at Mercy - St Joseph Warren Hospital in Warren, Ohio, United States. Hours are 2:30 p.m.–11:00 p.m. every other weekend with holiday rotation.

Salary: $17.00–$18.15 per hour, based on experience.

What you will do

  • Perform patient admissions, pre-registration, demographic and insurance data collection, and physician order processing.
  • Assign accurate medical record numbers, complete medical necessity and compliance checks, and support clean claims.
  • Verify insurance eligibility, select insurance plan codes, enter benefit information, and collect point-of-service payments and past-due balances.
  • Explain consent, Medicare, Tricare, observation, and other patient forms; obtain required signatures and distribute patient education materials.
  • Operate the telephone switchboard and provide compassionate customer service to patients, guarantors, colleagues, and departments.
  • Audit accounts, maintain accurate documentation, and provide reporting data to Patient Access leadership.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of customer service experience or experience in the medical field.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to work onsite during the specified evening, weekend, and holiday schedule.
  • Inquisitiveness and openness to innovation, including AI-enabled process improvements.
  • CRCR certification required within 9 months of hire; certification is company-paid.

Nice to have

  • Medical field, medical administration, registration, or healthcare experience.
  • Experience with scheduling, patient access, registration, admissions, or patient service coordination.
