Head of Engineering (Convo AI)

Location: London or Manchester, United Kingdom. Hybrid working requires at least two days per week, or 40% of working time, at an office site.

Salary: £126,523–£163,735 per year, plus an annual performance-related bonus.

What you will do

• Lead a multidisciplinary engineering team delivering Conversational AI experiences across customer servicing, intelligent search, AI-powered guidance, and agentic experiences.
• Own engineering delivery, people leadership, operational excellence, and technology execution across a portfolio of AI initiatives.
• Deliver scalable solutions combining GenAI, Agentic AI, orchestration, search, and fulfilment capabilities.
• Drive engineering excellence across software engineering, AI engineering, testing, observability, reliability, and operations.
• Embed monitoring, evaluation, experimentation, and operational controls into secure, resilient, scalable, and production-ready AI services.
• Lead workforce planning, organisational design, succession planning, recruitment, and capability development.

Requirements

• Proven experience building, organising, and leading high-performing multidisciplinary engineering teams in large-scale digital, technology, or platform environments.
• Experience delivering customer-facing Conversational AI, GenAI, Agentic AI, or intelligent assistant capabilities.
• Strong knowledge of modern software engineering, cloud-native architecture, APIs, DevOps, Agile delivery, and platform engineering.
• Experience managing delivery roadmaps, workforce plans, budgets, technology risks, operational performance, resilience, and technology strategy.
• Experience working in regulated environments with governance and risk controls covering reliability, security, safety, and explainability.
• Strong stakeholder management, influencing, coaching, and technical talent development skills.
