Staff ML Scientist (AI)

Location: San Francisco, United States; hybrid

Salary: $204,608–$306,912 annual base salary, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Design and ship send-time and channel optimization systems for member notifications.
• Build and deploy propensity models that balance engagement, adherence, fatigue, and unsubscribes.
• Set experimentation standards using multi-arm tests, sequential testing, CUPED, and safeguards against peeking.
• Own at least one machine learning model in production from development through monitoring and iteration.
• Mentor ML scientists, guide technical direction, and collaborate with product, engineering, data science, growth, and marketing.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Statistics, Operations Research, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field.
• At least 4 years of experience building and deploying production ML systems at consumer scale; 7+ years is listed as a preferred qualification.
• End-to-end experience shipping a recommendation, ranking, or sequential-decisioning system.
• Fluency in online experimentation and A/B testing, including multi-arm tests, sequential testing, CUPED, and common failure modes.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL, with the ability to review and improve production code.
• Deep understanding of machine learning and applied statistics.

Nice to have

• Production experience with contextual bandits or reinforcement learning.
• Experience with multi-objective optimization, causal inference, and cold-start or low-data-regime modeling.
• Experience hiring and developing a small ML team.
• Healthcare, fintech, or other regulated-data experience, including familiarity with HIPAA and BAA constraints.
• Experience with Statsig, Databricks, feature stores, Airflow, dbt, or TypeScript.
