TL;DR
User Research Officer (Biodata): Leading user research for EMBL-EBI’s Global Engagement programme to map life science data communities, understand user needs, and improve biodata resources with an accent on low- and middle-income countries. Focus on connecting stakeholders with data services and training teams, identifying priority use cases, and developing partnerships and distributed research practices.

Location: Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom; flexible hybrid working arrangements available.

Salary: £3,452.05 or £3,861.91 per month after tax, depending on grade, plus benefits and allowances.

hirify.global-EBI is a research organisation providing global access to biological databases, data analysis tools, and large-scale life science datasets.

What you will do

  • Lead user research for the hirify.global-EBI Global Engagement programme and identify new stakeholder communities.
  • Map life science data communities and resources in low- and middle-income countries, identifying engagement gaps and priority use cases.
  • Coordinate outreach to biodata users, contributors, and delivery partners to understand needs, experiences, and pain points.
  • Connect stakeholders with hirify.global-EBI data resources and training teams, communicating requirements to service teams.
  • Develop a framework for distributed user research and share expertise across the Global Engagement programme.
  • Recommend new data resources, engagement channels, events, collaborations, and partnerships.

Requirements

  • Familiarity with biodata services and the communities that use them.
  • Experience gathering data resource requirements and communicating them to resource delivery teams.
  • Experience working with biodata scientific communities in Africa, Latin America, and/or South East Asia.
  • Ability to develop insights across multiple fields and adapt perspectives to resource-limited settings.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with communities.
  • International applicants are supported through visa exemptions where applicable.

Nice to have

  • Technical understanding of bioinformatics processes or operations through software engineering, web development, research, data services, publications, or GitHub repositories.
  • Experience breaking down complex low-resource problems into requirements.
  • Experience with communication campaigns, social media engagement, strategic partnerships, or scientific communities.
