TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer II, Solar & Deployables (Aerospace): Designing and building spacecraft solar arrays and deployable systems from CAD through prototyping, testing, and production with an accent on mechanical design, engineering documentation, and hardware validation. Focus on designing qualification fixtures, supporting vibration and TVAC testing, performing first-order structural analysis, and transitioning components into constellation-scale production.
Location: Hybrid in San Jose, California, with on-site work required three days per week. Access to export-controlled information requires U.S. person status, authorization eligibility, or a reasonable likelihood of obtaining the required U.S. export authorization.
Salary: $144,000–$177,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.
Company
designs, builds, and operates LEO satellite constellations that deliver mission-critical Earth intelligence and remote-sensing data.
What you will do
- Design mechanical components and assemblies for spacecraft solar arrays and deployable systems from concept through detailed design and release.
- Create controlled engineering documentation, including drawings, GD&T, BOMs, and tolerance stacks.
- Build and test prototypes to evaluate concepts and retire design risk.
- Support qualification and acceptance testing, including deployment tests with gravity offload, vibration, and TVAC testing.
- Perform first-order engineering analysis for margins, stiffness, and sizing, collaborating with analysts on detailed FEA.
- Design test fixtures, GSE, and tooling; work with vendors and support production procedures, work instructions, and design reviews.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience designing, building, and testing mechanical hardware.
- Strong CAD skills, preferably SolidWorks, for component and assembly design.
- Strong knowledge of drawings, GD&T, BOMs, and tolerance stacks.
- Hands-on prototyping and testing experience, plus familiarity with machining, sheet metal, composites, or additive fabrication.
- B.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Nice to have
- Spacecraft hardware, deployables, or precision mechanisms experience.
- Structural analysis experience using hand calculations or FEA tools such as FEMAP/NASTRAN or ANSYS.
- Environmental testing, composite panel or bonded-joint design, and PLM/ECO/DCO experience.
- Python, MATLAB, or similar software skills.
Culture & Benefits
- Full-time employment with equity compensation.
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- 401(k) retirement plan, disability coverage, and life insurance.
- Three weeks of paid vacation for new employees, 12 paid holidays, unlimited sick time, and paid parental leave.
- Equal employment opportunity and reasonable accommodation support.
