Staff Software Engineer, Data Platform (Robotics)

Location: Fully remote within the United States, with an option to work hybrid near the Salem, Oregon; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; or Fremont, California offices.

Salary: $191,000–$299,000 USD annually

What you will do

• Design scalable pipelines for telemetry, logs, sensor data, and cloud software data generated by the robot fleet.
• Develop ingestion agents running on robot software for high-volume data collection in low-connectivity environments.
• Design data formats and protocols optimized for transmission, storage, and querying of recordings, sensor data, and telemetry.
• Build observability systems with tools such as Fluent Bit and OpenTelemetry for real-time fleet monitoring and analytics.
• Prepare high-volume, high-velocity datasets for analysis using Spark, Kafka, Beam, Flink, or equivalent technologies.
• Build and optimize AWS-based tools for business intelligence, fleet analytics, forecasting, and IoT data processing.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building and scaling cloud-based data platforms with AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Proficiency with big data frameworks such as Spark, Kafka, Beam, or Flink.
• Familiarity with Parquet, Arrow, Iceberg, Avro, and Protobuf.
• Experience with observability tools such as OpenTelemetry and Prometheus, including metrics, tracing, and logging.
• Proficiency in Java, Scala, another JVM language, or Python, with a strong understanding of distributed systems and microservices architectures.
• Current authorization to work in the United States is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with robotics, autonomous vehicles, sensor-heavy workloads, IoT, edge computing, or embedded devices.
• Experience with data catalogs, Databricks, Kubernetes, Bazel/Blaze, C++, or Rust.
• Experience with robot data formats such as MCAP and ROS, plus data playback and visualization tools such as Rerun.
