Staff Software Engineer (Go/Clojure)

Location: Remote in England or the United States; remote-first, async-first environment. Offices are located in Seattle and Paris.

Salary: €110,500–€181,500 plus equity in the EU; $170,350–$275,550 plus equity in the United States.

What you will do

• Set technical direction for backend and Developer Experience initiatives across Clojure, Go and adjacent systems.
• Design, build and operate distributed services, event pipelines, databases and APIs.
• Lead ambiguous cross-team initiatives from problem definition through measurable product or platform outcomes.
• Improve observability, reliability, incident readiness, performance and service ownership.
• Evaluate whether to retain, evolve or replace components, including reducing legacy Datomic dependencies.
• Mentor senior engineers, improve design and code reviews, and contribute to implementation, debugging and paid on-call rotation.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience and technical leadership on production systems at scale.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Deep experience building and operating backend or platform systems with distributed systems, event-driven architectures, APIs, databases and cloud-native infrastructure.
• Strong programming ability in at least one production language and the ability to become effective in unfamiliar languages and codebases.
• Experience leading complex cross-team initiatives and influencing without formal authority.
• Operational mindset covering observability, resilience, incident response and on-call ownership; clear communication for a remote, async-first environment.

Nice to have

• Production experience with Go, Clojure or both.
• Experience with Spanner, Datomic, Kafka or other distributed data and streaming platforms.
• Experience with build systems, containers, artefact workflows, developer tooling, platform evolution or software supply-chain products.
