TL;DR
Process Engineer (Advanced R&D) (AI) (Metal Additive Manufacturing): Developing novel processes for advanced metal 3D printing systems through large-scale in-situ data analysis, experiments, and post-build material characterization with an accent on multi-physics, process optimization, and quality metrics. Focus on designing experiments, interpreting massive data sets, qualifying printing tools, and collaborating across mechanical, software, and simulation engineering.

Location: Full-time onsite in Hawthorne, Los Angeles, California, five days a week, with very limited exceptions

Salary: $95,000–$140,000 per year, depending on academic level and demonstrated experience, plus stock options

What you will do

  • Analyze large in-situ data sets to understand physical mechanisms in metal additive manufacturing.
  • Design and execute experiments, analyze results, and develop and optimize printing processes.
  • Perform post-build metrology and analyze tensile strength, surface roughness, and alloy microstructure.
  • Generate and track quality metrics for printed customer parts, including dimensional accuracy and defect distribution.
  • Develop and implement tool qualification procedures.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and simulation engineers to improve printing technology with machine learning.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in materials science, physics, or a similar engineering discipline.
  • Strong physics fundamentals and first-principles problem-solving.
  • Experience with experimental design and statistical data analysis.
  • Strong ability to analyze and interpret extremely large data sets.
  • Ability to work onsite full-time in Hawthorne, five days per week.

Nice to have

  • Research experience in materials science, physics, or mechanical engineering.
  • Process development experience in semiconductor, solar, or display industries.
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, R, JMP, or Minitab.
  • Experience operating complex equipment and preparing metallurgical samples for microscopy.
  • Experience developing new processes from scratch and strong written and verbal communication.
