Lead Scientist – Cell Expression Technologies

Location: Cambridge, UK; fully site-based. Relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates and their families.

What you will do

• Lead mammalian cell expression projects, spending approximately 80% of the time on hands-on laboratory work.
• Develop CHO-based expression hosts for complex therapeutic proteins and transfer technologies toward GMP manufacturing.
• Engineer mammalian cell lines through random and targeted integration, CRISPR-based gene editing, and expression vector development.
• Characterise engineered cell lines using NGS, ddPCR, qPCR, flow cytometry, and advanced cell culture techniques.
• Analyse and sign off experimental data, maintain traceable records, and communicate findings through written and oral reports.
• Collaborate across functions, mentor junior scientists, and lead proof-of-concept technology development projects.

Requirements

• PhD or equivalent advanced scientific qualification with relevant academic or industrial R&D experience.
• Strong practical expertise in CHO cell line engineering and mammalian expression system development.
• Hands-on molecular biology experience, including development and manipulation of expression systems.
• Experience designing, executing, and interpreting complex cell line engineering and characterisation experiments.
• Experience leading scientific projects, mentoring colleagues, and contributing to technology transfer toward GMP manufacturing.
• Working knowledge of experimental design and statistics, with strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills.
