Senior/Staff Systems Engineer, Autonomy Verification

Location: Mountain View, California, United States

Base pay: $176,400–$319,720 per year, depending on level, experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. Eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Define requirements for autonomous systems to operate safely within their operational design domain and comply with road rules.
• Design generalizable metrics and acceptance criteria using safety standards and methodologies.
• Develop and apply synthetic and log simulation, on-road log, closed-course, and third-party accident reconstruction test strategies.
• Collaborate with Behavior, Perception, Data Science, Product, Legal, Public Trust, simulation infrastructure, and test integration teams.
• Build automated verification workflows and quantify test coverage, simulation realism, and relevance for deployment.
• Connect test results to structured evidence supporting the autonomy safety case.

Requirements

• 5+ years of technical experience, including 3+ years developing or validating autonomous vehicles or robotic systems.
• Experience creating behavior requirements for SAE Level 2, Level 3, or Level 4 autonomous or robotic systems operating within an operational design domain.
• Experience with simulation and real-world testing of autonomous systems.
• Strong understanding of autonomy architecture, including sensing, localization, perception, prediction, behavior, and control.
• Hands-on software development experience with Python or C++.
• Strong analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Background in autonomous vehicles, ideally with Level 4 deployment experience.
• Experience building computational driving-behavior models or ML-based behavior-evaluation metrics.
• Familiarity with STPA, ISO 21448, or ISO 8800.
• Experience developing a safety case or systematically compiling evidence for one.
