Lead Substation Physical Engineer

Location: Fully remote from a home office in Puerto Rico

Salary: $107,959.00–$183,531.00 per year

What you will do

• Lead and oversee physical design drawings for high-voltage substations, including one-line and three-line diagrams, general arrangements, sections, electrical details, grounding, conduit, control cubicle, cable tray, lighting, low-voltage AC panels, and lightning protection.
• Lead AC load, illumination, grounding, and lightning-shielding engineering studies.
• Develop bills of materials from design criteria and incorporate vendor information into design deliverables.
• Coordinate with protection and controls, civil and structural engineering, and drafting disciplines.
• Support client meetings, technical discussions, project planning, site visits, and constructability reviews.
• Ensure QA/QC processes, client standards, industry codes, and utility requirements are followed while mentoring junior engineers and designers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering; a power systems focus is preferred.
• At least 8 years of experience in substation physical design for electric utilities.
• Professional Engineer license or ability to obtain one within 6 months.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or a similar design tool.
• Knowledge of substation design standards and practices, including IEEE, NESC, NEC, and utility specifications.
• Strong communication, project management, initiative, and leadership skills, with the ability to mentor junior staff.

Nice to have

• 12 or more years of experience in substation physical design for electric utilities.
• Experience with 3D substation projects modeled in Autodesk Inventor.
• Familiarity with CDEGS grounding studies and Agi32 illumination software.
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
