Lead Software Developer (Java)

Location: Sydney, Australia; hybrid work with work from home up to 2 days per week. The role requires Australian citizenship and eligibility to obtain and maintain Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance.

What you will do

• Own end-to-end technical design and architecture across the project.
• Lead complex Java development and architecture decisions for backend systems, APIs, integration layers, and microservices.
• Act as the senior escalation point for production incidents and lead root cause analysis across distributed platforms.
• Coordinate technical dependencies with operations, infrastructure, security, development, testing, and business stakeholders.
• Guide delivery teams on implementation plans, design reviews, deployment approaches, testing strategies, and technical work breakdown.
• Maintain architecture documentation and improve system reliability, performance, security, and delivery processes.

Requirements

• Australian citizenship is mandatory, with no exceptions.
• Must hold or be eligible to obtain and maintain Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance and pass AGSVA vetting.
• Experience as a Technical or Solution Architect or senior technical lead on complex integration-heavy projects.
• Expert Java programming skills and strong end-to-end solution architecture experience.
• Experience with ForgeRock or equivalent IAM platforms, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Apache Kafka, MQ, Kubernetes or K3s, Docker, Apache NiFi, MinIO, Longhorn, Jenkins, SonarQube, Harbor, and Nexus.
• Strong knowledge of on-premise infrastructure, networking, operations, security, compliance, DevSecOps, and stakeholder communication.

Nice to have

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of technical experience, including architecture or technical leadership.
• TOGAF or equivalent architecture certification and relevant technical certifications.
• Agile/Scrum experience and background in Australian Government, Defence, or other security-cleared environments.
• Familiarity with ASD Essential Eight, ISM, and PSPF.
