Lead Software Developer (Java)

Location: Sydney, Australia; hybrid work with up to 2 days per week from home. The role requires Australian citizenship and current or attainable Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance.

What you will do

• Own end-to-end technical design and architecture across the project.
• Lead complex Java development and architecture decisions for backend systems, APIs, integration layers, and microservices.
• Act as the senior escalation point for production incidents and lead root cause analysis across distributed platforms.
• Coordinate technical dependencies across operations, infrastructure, security, development, testing, and business teams.
• Guide development and testing teams by decomposing designs into implementable work and reviewing deployment and test strategies.
• Maintain architecture documentation, manage technical risks, and improve system reliability, performance, and delivery processes.

Requirements

• Australian citizenship is mandatory, with eligibility to obtain and maintain Australian Government security clearance and pass AGSVA vetting.
• Experience as a Technical Architect, Solution Architect, or senior technical lead on complex integration-heavy projects.
• Expert Java programming skills for complex backend systems, APIs, and integration middleware.
• Strong end-to-end solution architecture, distributed-systems troubleshooting, stakeholder management, and technical communication skills.
• Experience with ForgeRock or equivalent IAM platforms; MongoDB; Elasticsearch; Apache Kafka; MQ; Kubernetes or K3s; Docker; and Apache NiFi.
• Knowledge of MinIO, Longhorn, Jenkins, SonarQube, Harbor, Nexus, on-premise infrastructure, networking, security, compliance, and DevSecOps.

Nice to have

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of technical experience, including architecture or technical leadership.
• TOGAF or equivalent architecture certification and relevant technical certifications.
• Agile/Scrum experience and work in Australian Government, Defence, or security-cleared environments.
• Familiarity with ASD Essential Eight, ISM, and the Protective Security Policy Framework.
