Postdoc Multi-Scale Mechanobiological Cardiac Growth and Remodelling (Cardiac Mechanics): Developing multi-scale computational models of chronic cardiac growth and remodeling for virtual human twins with an accent on nonlinear mechanics, finite element modeling, and bio-chemo-mechanical remodeling laws. Focus on coupling tissue-level cardiac mechanics with systemic hemodynamic and neurohumoral inputs, calibrating patient-specific models, and building uncertainty-aware scientific software.
Location: Full-time, on-site position based at in Delft, Netherlands. Relocation support is available for moving to the Netherlands.
Salary: €3,546–€5,538 per month, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

What you will do
- Develop bio-chemo-mechanical and constituent-specific cardiac growth and remodeling laws for chronic changes in myocardial structure and function.
- Implement and analyze the models in finite element frameworks for cardiac mechanics.
- Couple tissue-level cardiac mechanics with systemic hemodynamic and neurohumoral inputs within the VITAL virtual human twin consortium.
- Contribute to patient-specific and cohort-level simulations, including sensitivity analysis, uncertainty-aware parameter estimation, surrogate modeling, and model reduction.
- Develop robust, reusable, and well-documented scientific software in collaboration with researchers and consortium partners.
- Publish research, present findings at international conferences, and support PhD and MSc students.
Requirements
- PhD in mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, computational science, biophysics, biomedical engineering, or a closely related field.
- Strong background in nonlinear continuum mechanics, tensor algebra, finite element modeling, and computational solid or soft tissue mechanics.
- Well-developed coding expertise in Python, Julia, C++, Fortran, or a similar scientific computing language.
- Experience with Git and collaborative scientific software development.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and excellent written and spoken English.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a multidisciplinary international consortium.
Nice to have
- Knowledge of cardiovascular biomechanics, cardiac growth and remodeling, mechanobiology, active cardiac mechanics, or adaptive soft tissue modeling.
- Experience with finite element software or research codes such as Abaqus, deal.II, FEniCS, or JAX-FEM.
- Experience with uncertainty quantification, Bayesian inference, inverse modeling, parameter estimation, or model calibration.
- Experience with high-performance computing, surrogate modeling, reduced-order modeling, machine-learning-assisted computational mechanics, or virtual cohort simulations.
- Interest in mentoring, scientific writing, and proposal development.
