Principal Software Engineer

Location: Columbus, Ohio; Irvine, California; or remote within the United States. Hybrid work flexibility is offered.

What you will do

• Architect and lead critical systems, services, and infrastructure with an emphasis on reliability, security, performance, and maintainability.
• Partner with Product and program leaders to align engineering solutions with user needs, regulatory requirements, and business outcomes.
• Set technical standards, improve code review quality, address technical debt, and drive initiatives that improve team velocity and code quality.
• Coach and mentor engineers across teams, helping them grow, navigate ambiguity, and develop their careers.
• Evaluate technologies, contribute to architectural foundations and complex codebases, and unblock teams through technical leadership.
• Support recruiting and onboarding while strengthening a culture of engineering excellence.

Requirements

• 12+ years of engineering experience across multiple technology stacks, including deep experience building and scaling distributed systems.
• Proven ability to set technical direction, influence without formal authority, and deliver results as a hands-on technical leader.
• Strong knowledge of software engineering practices, including CI/CD, observability, automated testing, and infrastructure as code.
• Experience with cloud-native systems, preferably AWS, plus Docker and Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of relational and non-relational databases.
• Experience in highly regulated environments, preferably healthcare, with knowledge of compliance and data protection such as HIPAA.
