Lead Software Engineer/Developer (Python/Django)

What you will do

• Lead the technical design, development, testing, and delivery of Python and Django backend services, REST APIs, and ETL pipelines.
• Build content selection, metadata transformation, validation, reconciliation, secure transfer, and workflow administration capabilities.
• Design relational data models and optimize PostgreSQL schemas, queries, indexes, search, and indexing with Solr and Elasticsearch.
• Develop asynchronous processing and operate containerized services across AWS environments using Terraform and Docker.
• Maintain Java components, Jenkins and Git continuous integration pipelines, automated quality checks, and unit tests.
• Mentor a mid-level developer, coordinate with government technical staff, participate in Agile ceremonies, and contribute to security, accessibility, and lifecycle documentation.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of professional software development experience, including technical leadership or senior development on an Agile team.
• Deep production experience with Python, Django, REST APIs, microservices, ETL or data integration, authentication, validation, and error handling.
• Strong PostgreSQL data modeling, schema design, query optimization, and migration experience.
• Working proficiency in Java and hands-on experience with Solr, Elasticsearch, AWS, Terraform, Jenkins, Git, and JIRA.
• Experience with peer code review, technical design, mentoring, Agile/Scrum delivery, and collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• U.S. work authorization, Public Trust or Suitability Determination eligibility, and ability to handle Controlled Unclassified Information are required; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• Federal government, digital asset management, digital collections, or metadata workflow experience.
• Celery or comparable distributed task queues, Docker, Red Hat Linux, Apache, Varnish, Selenium, SonarQube, Grafana, or Tableau.
• Section 508, WCAG 2.1, NIST SP 800-53, CUI, A&A/ATO, and digital metadata standards experience.
• Familiarity with React, Angular, Bootstrap, Dublin Core, METS, MODS, or MARC.
