Lead Android Platform Engineer (Embedded Android)

Location: Hybrid in San Jose, California, USA; onsite at the San Jose office 2–3 days per week, with the remaining days remote.

Annual base salary: $168,000–$240,000, depending on location and experience.

What you will do

• Architect, develop, integrate, and deliver Android-based appliance platforms for video collaboration and embedded systems products.
• Customize Android for kiosk-style operation, device management, security, reliability, recovery, updates, and production readiness.
• Work across the bootloader, Linux kernel, device drivers, Android HAL, native services, framework services, and user-facing functionality.
• Bring up Android platforms on new SoCs and integrate BSP releases from vendors, ODMs, JDMs, and technology partners.
• Debug and optimize camera, display, audio, multimedia, hardware interface, power, latency, and system performance issues.
• Guide architecture decisions, review partner designs, document solutions, and mentor engineers across platform development and system integration.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 8+ years of experience in embedded Linux, Android platform development, or Android device software engineering, including shipping Android-based hardware products.
• Deep knowledge of Android architecture, including the framework, native services, HAL, vendor partition, system services, boot process, AOSP, and Android build systems.
• Strong Linux kernel and device driver experience, including device tree, kernel configuration, debugging, performance analysis, and hardware bring-up.
• Deep experience with at least one Android multimedia subsystem: Camera Framework/Camera HAL, Display Framework/Hardware Composer/SurfaceFlinger, or Audio Framework/Audio HAL/AudioFlinger/Audio Policy.
• Experience with Git, Gerrit, CI workflows, SELinux policy development, Android security, and cross-functional collaboration with internal teams and external partners.

Nice to have

• Experience with Android appliance, video conferencing, smart display, collaboration, consumer electronics, or enterprise device products.
• Experience with multi-camera systems, video pipelines, ISP tuning, computer vision workloads, audio DSPs, microphone arrays, beamforming, or echo cancellation.
• Experience with HDMI, USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, touch controllers, display interfaces, Android Enterprise, kiosk mode, secure boot, OTA updates, or factory provisioning.
• Experience with Qualcomm, MediaTek, NXP, Ambarella, Rockchip, or similar SoC platforms and with CTS/VTS, GMS, or partner certification programs.
• Experience with systrace, Perfetto, ftrace, simpleperf, logcat, dumpsys, bugreport, kernel tracing, and technical leadership involving ODMs, JDMs, or BSP vendors.
