TL;DR

Industrial Engineer (Automotive Manufacturing): Leading complex industrial engineering projects in a high-volume manufacturing plant with an accent on standardized work, labor standards, line balancing, and productivity improvement. Focus on optimizing headcount, supporting model launches and process changes, analyzing manufacturing performance, and designing safe, ergonomic, and stable operations.

Location: Onsite in Kansas City, Kansas, United States; full-time presence at the designated facility is required. The role may be eligible for relocation benefits. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship, including H-1B, TN, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, and J-1 support.

What you will do

  • Lead the design, validation, and maintenance of labor standards, standardized work, and line balancing for safe and efficient operations.
  • Own productivity and headcount optimization initiatives from business case development through implementation and benefit tracking.
  • Translate product and process changes into industrial engineering solutions for operation readiness, model changeovers, and launches.
  • Analyze throughput, productivity, absenteeism, and constraint data to identify systemic issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Partner with Production, Quality, Maintenance, Materials, Ergonomics, Safety, and Launch teams on continuous improvement projects.
  • Provide technical coaching and informal leadership to early-career engineers and other salaried partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment; automotive or discrete assembly experience is preferred.
  • Expertise in time study, work measurement, line balancing, standardized work, capacity analysis, and layout fundamentals.
  • Experience leading cross-functional projects with measurable productivity, quality, or cost improvements.
  • Proficiency with time standards, line balance and throughput tools, CAD layout tools, and data analysis or visualization tools.
  • Ability to work onsite full-time and perform physical activities in the manufacturing environment, including walking long distances, climbing stairs, and wearing personal protective equipment.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing, Operations Research, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Automotive assembly or complex mixed-model manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with GM or equivalent labor standards, standardized work, manufacturing data, and CAD-based layout systems.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing systems such as Global Manufacturing System, including problem solving and waste elimination.
  • Experience mentoring engineers, co-ops, or interns, with strong financial acumen in labor cost and investment justification.
