Engineer / Scientist II, R&D Strategic Innovation Accelerator (Bioprocess Engineering) (protein purification and downstream processing): Designing and executing laboratory-scale downstream processing experiments for biologics manufacturing with an accent on chromatography, filtration, harvest clarification, and ultrafiltration/diafiltration. Focus on operating and troubleshooting bioprocessing equipment, developing scalable and automated workflows, and solving process-performance challenges through quantitative analysis and experimental design.
Location: Bend, Oregon, USA; fully site-based role. Relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates and their families.

What you will do
- Design and execute laboratory-scale downstream processing experiments involving chromatography, filtration, harvest clarification, and ultrafiltration/diafiltration.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot bioprocessing equipment and control systems, including ÄKTA systems where applicable.
- Develop scalable, high-throughput, and automated workflows that produce reproducible process data.
- Apply engineering principles to evaluate process performance, solve practical problems, and guide iterative experimental design.
- Contribute to cell culture, bioreactor operation, automation, and analytical assay activities as project needs evolve.
- Communicate experimental results within fast-paced, multidisciplinary R&D teams.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Bioprocess Engineering, or a related field.
- 2–4 years of hands-on experience in downstream processing, protein purification, or bioprocess development.
- Experience with chromatography, filtration, harvest clarification, or ultrafiltration/diafiltration unit operations.
- Strong engineering fundamentals in bioseparations, quantitative problem-solving, data analysis, and experimental design.
- Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and maintaining laboratory equipment.
- Ability to work fully onsite in Bend, Oregon, USA.
Nice to have
- Experience designing chromatography experiments and operating ÄKTA systems.
- Experience with mammalian cell culture, bioreactors, automation, programming, or assay development.
