Backend Engineer (ClickHouse)

TL;DR

Backend Engineer (Python/ClickHouse): Developing and scaling infrastructure for a managed ClickHouse service with an accent on database lifecycle orchestration and Linux internals. Focus on building async-first backend services, optimizing distributed system performance, and automating delivery pipelines.

Location: Hybrid in Helsinki (office attendance required 3 times per week)

What you will do

• Design and maintain backend services in Python (FastAPI, asyncio) for ClickHouse lifecycle management.
• Develop and optimize CI/CD pipelines using Buildkite and GitHub Actions to ensure reliable code delivery.
• Troubleshoot production issues across the stack, from Python application code to Linux OS internals.
• Collaborate on technical planning and contribute to the product roadmap within a focused team.
• Implement well-tested, type-checked code and conduct thorough peer reviews.
• Integrate AI coding tools into the daily development workflow to accelerate delivery.

Requirements

• Production-grade Python skills with expertise in async patterns (asyncio, aiohttp).
• Strong understanding of the internal workings of relational and analytical databases.
• Deep Linux knowledge, specifically with systemd and filesystem internals (Fedora preferred).
• Proven experience building and maintaining CI/CD delivery pipelines.
• Proficiency in automated testing, including unit, integration, and system tests.
• Fluent English (written and verbal).
• Must be based in Helsinki to support the hybrid work policy (3 days in office).

Nice to have

• Operational knowledge of ClickHouse, query optimization, or contributions to the project.
• Ability to read or contribute to database engine code in C++ or C.
• Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, Azure) and Terraform or similar IaC tools.
• Operational experience with PostgreSQL.
• Knowledge of software and network security.
