Principal Engineer - AI Architect (AI)

Location: Hybrid, with an expectation to work an average of 2 days per week from an HPE office in San Juan or Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

What you will do

• Design end-to-end AI systems spanning data ingestion, model deployment, and user interfaces.
• Define AI roadmaps, identify high-impact use cases, assess ROI, and align architecture with organizational goals.
• Design data pipelines, model lifecycles, orchestration, enterprise integrations, and distributed AI applications.
• Select and deploy ML/DL models and frameworks; define versioning, fine-tuning, monitoring, and CI/CD strategies for ML pipelines.
• Ensure scalability, fault tolerance, cost efficiency, data privacy, ethical AI practices, auditability, and compliance.
• Mentor engineers and data scientists, translate business requirements into technical tasks, and lead cross-functional collaboration.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or a closely related quantitative discipline.
• Typically 10+ years of experience.
• Strong networking knowledge and proficiency in Python, API integration, API design, and microservices; experience with Java and Node.js.
• Strong knowledge of AI/ML algorithms, LLMs, RAG, and agent-based systems.
• Experience with model selection, NLP frameworks including TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Hugging Face.
• Experience with MLOps, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms including AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience designing distributed AI applications and data architectures involving ETL, feature stores, and vector databases.
• Knowledge of AI security and compliance, including LLM guardrails, prompt safety, data privacy, ethical AI practices, and audit trails.
• Strong communication skills to explain complex AI concepts to non-technical stakeholders and provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud and distributed systems, including AWS, Azure, or GCP, and container orchestration is desirable.
