Senior Backend Engineer (AI Engineering)

What you will do

• Design and build reusable flow components and agentic flows in the Flow Registry using Python and LangGraph.
• Develop and maintain secure, tested, and performant backend features across the Duo Workflow Service and hirify.global Rails monolith.
• Integrate generative AI models, providers, tools, and multi-agent orchestration patterns into hirify.global Duo Chat.
• Design and review GraphQL and REST APIs, chat entry points, permissions, and foundational-flow registration.
• Improve debugging, observability, latency, error rates, resilience, and test coverage using pytest, RSpec, and related tools.
• Collaborate with Product, UX, frontend, and AI specialists, contribute documentation, and participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations.

Requirements

• Significant experience building and maintaining production Python backends, APIs, data models, and asynchronous or long-running workloads.
• Experience delivering AI-powered agentic backend features, including large language model integration, tool or function calling, and multi-agent orchestration.
• Working proficiency in Ruby on Rails or strong willingness to learn it.
• Experience designing or extending scalable, maintainable, and backward-compatible REST or GraphQL APIs.
• Strong SQL skills and familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, plus experience diagnosing performance and reliability issues at scale.
• Ability to work remotely from Canada or the United Kingdom. Openness to async-first collaboration in a distributed team is required.
