TL;DR

Senior Staff Software Engineer (Python/SQL): Architecting and leading Fivetran’s semantic layer to turn raw warehouse data into consistent, reusable metrics and analytical models with an accent on scalable distributed query execution, performance, and reliability. Focus on designing modeling/query semantics, building and optimizing the query execution engine, and operating sync/compute services on a global Kubernetes cluster.

What you will do

• Design, build, and lead the architecture of the semantic layer, defining modeling and query semantics for metrics and analytics.
• Independently design and implement scalable distributed data system features and performance improvements on cloud infrastructure.
• Develop, maintain, and test production code for owned services.
• Drive technical direction and architectural designs across the team, including design and code reviews.
• Investigate and fix performance and scalability challenges in query execution over large data warehouses.
• Participate in on-call rotation, hiring, and mentor junior developers.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including designing and building reusable libraries, services, and platforms from scratch.
• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, with deep experience in relational databases (Postgres) and data warehouses.
• Proven ability to write well-structured, performant code and independently lead software/infrastructure design.
• Experience with distributed systems and cloud security concepts.
• Hands-on experience with cloud technologies (AWS, GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Experience with CI tools (BuildKite) and observability tools (Grafana) is required/expected; AI code assist/coding agents experience is expected.

Nice to have

• Experience building semantic/metrics layers or BI/analytics modeling tools.
• Experience with query engines and query optimization (DuckDB, Spark, or similar).
• Experience with ETL/ELT and cloud-based data platforms.
• Experience designing query languages, DSLs, or analytical APIs.
• Open-source contributions to data/analytics tooling.
