Senior Staff Engineer (Agentic AI)

Location: Hybrid role based in Mountain View or San Francisco, California, United States

Salary: $251,000–$310,000 USD annual base salary

What you will do

• Design, build, and deploy production-grade agentic AI systems for complex evaluation challenges.
• Develop automated evaluation frameworks and objective metrics for measuring AI agent accuracy, safety, and reliability.
• Automate the creation and scaling of challenging evaluation problems for the Waymo Driver.
• Define technical strategy and drive execution across multiple teams in an ambiguous, rapidly evolving domain.
• Report to an Engineering Director in a senior individual contributor role.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proven experience designing, building, evaluating, and deploying novel agent-based AI solutions in production.
• Deep expertise in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, including autonomous agents, multi-agent orchestration, and LLM integrations with external tools and APIs.
• Typically 7+ years of software engineering experience focused on architecting and building large-scale, complex systems.
• Strong technical leadership, communication, and cross-functional execution skills.

Nice to have

• PhD in Computer Science or a related field with an AI/ML specialization.
• Experience with agentic frameworks, knowledge graphs, and reasoning engines.
• Proficiency in C++ and experience building production-grade services.
• Experience with autonomous vehicle simulation, testing, or evaluation.
• Familiarity with Google’s or Waymo’s internal AI/ML platforms and infrastructure.
