Director, Engineering (AI)

Location: New York City office, Financial District; in-office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week

Salary: $395,000–$414,000 annually, inclusive of bonus

What you will do

• Lead the Financial Incentives engineering function across claims ingestion, eligibility, adjudication, benefit accumulation, payments, and treasury.
• Own adjudication accuracy, payment timeliness, ledger reconciliation, ingestion SLAs, reliability, security, and the multi-year technical roadmap.
• Set validation standards, quality expectations, delivery priorities, and an evidence-based engineering performance culture.
• Stay hands-on with design reviews, code, incidents, adjudication logic, event contracts, data modeling, and money movement.
• Build AI-native engineering practices, including harnesses, validation frameworks, and Claude Skills with safeguards for autonomous workflows.
• Hire, develop, and organize Engineering Managers and senior individual contributors while partnering with Product, Finance, Operations, payment partners, and the CTO.

Requirements

• 10+ years building and operating high-scale, high-reliability backend systems.
• 5+ years leading engineering teams, including managing managers.
• Strong technical judgment in distributed systems, event-driven architecture, idempotency, fault tolerance, backpressure, data consistency, and API design.
• Experience with sensitive PHI, PII, or financial data, including encryption, access control, auditing, unvalidated third-party inputs, and reconciliation.
• Experience with AWS and modern cloud infrastructure, plus the ability to define validation criteria from designs, schemas, and incident timelines.
• Ability to work in the New York City office three days per week and lead with high ownership, urgency, and accountability.
