Research Associate, Biology

Location: San Francisco, CA; hybrid policy requiring staff to be in an office at least 25% of the time, with some roles requiring more office time.

Annual salary: $95,000–$120,000 USD.

What you will do

• Execute molecular biology and biochemistry experiments at the bench under senior scientist direction.
• Maintain meticulous, reproducible records and contribute to shared protocols.
• Troubleshoot experiments, propose adjustments, and present results in group meetings.
• Maintain mammalian and bacterial cell lines, material stocks, and reagent inventories.
• Learn and adopt new experimental techniques rapidly as projects evolve, with training provided.

Requirements

• Hands-on research experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, or a closely related field.
• Proficiency with PCR, gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning, and plasmid preparation.
• Experience with aseptic technique, bacterial or mammalian cell culture, and nucleic acid extraction, purification, and quantification.
• Ability to follow, document, and adapt experimental protocols with care and precision.
• High motivation, eagerness to learn, and enthusiasm for hands-on bench work.
• Practical and resourceful approach to experimental problem-solving.
• Ability to listen carefully, take feedback, ask good questions, and adapt when priorities shift quickly.
• Interest in using AI models as tools at the bench to plan experiments, interpret data, and decide what to try next.
• Minimum education: bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; relevant field demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice to have

• BS or MS in molecular biology, biochemistry, chemical biology, microbiology, bioengineering, or a related discipline.
• Protein expression and purification experience, including affinity, SEC, or IEX.
• Mammalian cell culture experience, including transfection and stable line maintenance.
• Experience with enzyme kinetics or quantitative biochemical assay development, including fluorescence, absorbance, or FRET.
• Next-generation sequencing library preparation experience.
• Familiarity with bioinformatics workflows and molecular biology software for sequence analysis, alignment, primer design, and construct design.
• Experience using AI tools such as Claude for literature review, protocol drafting, data interpretation, or experimental troubleshooting.
