TL;DR

Senior Legal Counsel (Fintech): Providing strategic legal guidance for a growing suite of financial products with an accent on regulatory compliance, payments, and crypto-asset law. Focus on navigating complex regulatory landscapes, partnering with product teams to launch new features, and leveraging AI to optimize legal operations.

Location: Must be based in Canada (Remote-friendly with optional office access in Montreal and Toronto).

Salary: 150,000 - 220,000 CAD

What you will do

  • Partner with Product and Compliance teams to design and launch new financial products while ensuring regulatory alignment.
  • Advise on legal matters including securities, AML/ATF, payments, and consumer protection.
  • Lead regulatory initiatives, including audits, licensing, and policy development.
  • Provide practical, business-oriented advice to leadership to help navigate ambiguity.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage AI and automation to improve legal workflows.
  • Support corporate governance, commercial agreements, and strategic projects.

Requirements

  • Canadian-qualified lawyer with 5+ years of experience.
  • Experience in fintech, payments, financial services, or crypto.
  • Ability to operate independently in a lean team and make decisions with incomplete information.
  • Strong business-oriented legal judgment and ability to translate complex issues for non-legal stakeholders.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Must be based in Canada.

Nice to have

  • Experience working in both law firms and in-house legal teams.
  • Background in a startup or scaleup environment.
  • Familiarity with Bitcoin, securities, and regulated financial products.
  • Experience using AI and lightweight tooling for legal efficiency.
