Senior Legal Counsel (Crypto)

Location: Remote from anywhere in Canada, with optional access to offices in Montreal and Toronto.

What you will do

• Partner with Product, Compliance, and business teams to design and launch new financial products.
• Advise on securities, AML/ATF, payments, consumer protection, and other regulatory matters.
• Lead regulatory initiatives, including examinations, audits, licensing work, policy development, and regulator engagement.
• Provide practical legal guidance to leaders and operational teams navigating ambiguity and business risk.
• Identify opportunities to use AI, automation, and scalable processes to improve legal work.
• Support commercial agreements, corporate governance, employment matters, and strategic projects.

Requirements

• Canadian-qualified lawyer with 5+ years of experience.
• Experience or strong interest in fintech, payments, financial services, crypto, or technology companies.
• Ability to work independently, make decisions with incomplete information, and operate effectively in a lean team.
• Business-oriented legal judgment and the ability to provide clear, practical guidance to non-legal stakeholders.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Fluent English is required.

Nice to have

• Experience in both a law firm and an in-house legal team.
• Experience in a startup or scaleup environment.
• Familiarity with Bitcoin, crypto, securities, payments, AML, or regulated Canadian financial products.
• Experience using AI, automation, or lightweight tooling to improve legal work.
