Engineer (AI): Building and scaling AI agents within the Comet and Perplexity Computer ecosystems with an accent on multimodal decision models and digital world navigation. Focus on designing secure-by-design agentic capabilities and optimizing interaction between agents and their environments.

Location: San Francisco (Note: Company provides benefits for employees outside the U.S., but USD salary ranges apply specifically to U.S.-based positions)

Salary: $220K – $405K (U.S. positions)

Perplexity is building a platform for generalized frontier intelligence to empower users with AI agents that can faithfully actualize their intent.

What you will do

• Design AI agents capable of navigating the digital world and performing valuable units of work for users.
• Train action and decision models based on complex multimodal states to accomplish user objectives.
• Develop secure-by-design agentic capabilities, including permission architectures and payload classifiers.
• Ensure high-quality experiences across desktop, mobile, and headless cloud environments through flexible abstractions.
• Collaborate with engineers, designers, and product managers to integrate core functionality into agentic products.
• Contribute to AI evaluation, testing, code quality, and overall product reliability.

Requirements

• Strong foundational familiarity with the full AI product stack.
• Proficiency in Python.
• Significant experience in at least one of the following: context engineering/tool interfaces, post-training and reinforcement learning (especially for multimodal models), or browser technologies (CDP, Playwright, extension development).
• Strong product intuition and a high bar for user experience excellence.
• Ability to thrive in a small, fast-moving team with a willingness to take full ownership.

Nice to have

• Proficiency in TypeScript, Go, and/or Rust.
