Editor (Local News)

Location: Must be based in the East Bay and able to work at least three days a week from a combination of the Concord and Oakland offices. Occasional in-person training or meetings, shift work, reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license are required.

Salary: $80,000–$90,000 per year, plus a cell stipend and mileage reimbursement.

What you will do

• Manage and coach journalists producing daily coverage, enterprise, accountability stories, explainers and centerpiece work.
• Edit stories on deadline with a focus on accuracy, fairness, clarity and impact.
• Set East Bay coverage priorities across breaking news, public safety, local government, housing, education, courts, transportation, politics and community life.
• Develop enterprise ideas, sharpen story framing and identify meaningful follow-up coverage.
• Collaborate with newsroom, visual, digital and audience teams to distribute major stories effectively.
• Plan coverage across digital, newsletters, social media, print and front-page presentations using audience data and newsroom priorities.

Requirements

• At least three years of editing experience, preferably in a daily newsroom.
• Excellent news judgment and the ability to make sound decisions under deadline pressure.
• Experience coaching reporters, improving stories and developing ambitious coverage.
• Strong organizational, planning and communication skills with a collaborative leadership style.
• Comfort with audience metrics and digital publishing strategy.
• Working knowledge of Slack, Zoom, Google Workspace and WordPress; a journalism or related bachelor’s degree is preferred, with equivalent experience considered.

Nice to have

• Experience with analytics tools and digital publishing systems.
• Fluency in a second language.
