TL;DR
AI Research and Development Engineer (Physical AI): Building the end-to-end stack for robotic intelligence by scaling foundation models to real hardware with an accent on Vision-Language-Action (VLA) policies and edge optimization. Focus on developing safety runtimes, model-agnostic inference APIs, and ensuring reliable real-time performance on constrained robotic platforms.

Location: Must be based in and work from the Netherlands

Salary: €74,990–€139,760

What you will do

  • Implement and fine-tune state-of-the-art Vision-Language-Action policies for robotic manipulation.
  • Optimize VLA models for edge deployment using graph compilation and precision calibration.
  • Develop safety runtimes to manage velocity limits and workspace bounds for real-world operation.
  • Build model-agnostic inference APIs to support diverse robotic platforms and hardware backends.
  • Support deployment across edge accelerators to ensure broad hardware compatibility.
  • Publish research papers contributing to vision, physical AI, and robotic learning.

Requirements

  • Must be based in the Netherlands
  • Extensive experience with PyTorch and distributed training for large-scale models.
  • Hands-on experience with robotic systems, including industrial robots, EMR, and humanoid robots.
  • Deep understanding of VLA architectures and imitation learning techniques.
  • Technical expertise in model export, graph compilation, and precision calibration.
  • Familiarity with inference runtimes like OpenVINO, ONNX Runtime, or ExecuTorch.

Nice to have

  • PhD in robotics, machine learning, or computer vision.
  • Contributions to open-source robotics or embodied AI projects.
  • Background in low-level performance profiling and hardware-aware optimization.
