TL;DR

Data Engineer (Bioinformatics): Optimizing and enhancing large-scale data pipelines for macromolecular structure databases with an accent on database migration and performance tuning. Focus on building robust architectures for PDB and AFDB resources to support global scientific research.

Location: Must be based in or able to relocate to Hinxton, UK (Hybrid: 2 days on-site, 3 days remote).

Salary: £3,303 per month (net, excluding pension/insurance).

What you will do

  • Analyze and optimize existing data pipelines for improved scalability and performance.
  • Collaborate with bioinformaticians to integrate pipelines with existing systems.
  • Monitor pipeline reliability and troubleshoot performance issues.
  • Execute complex database migrations between RDBMS platforms, specifically Oracle to PostgreSQL.
  • Document processes and workflows to facilitate knowledge sharing.

Requirements

  • MSc in Computer Science, IT, or Bioinformatics with demonstrated IT expertise.
  • Expertise in Data Modelling and Advanced SQL.
  • Proficiency in Python and ETL processes for large-scale data.
  • Strong experience with PostgreSQL, Oracle, and MySQL/MariaDB.
  • Proven experience in database migration planning and execution.
  • Proficiency in oral and written English.

Nice to have

  • PhD in a relevant field.
  • Experience with big data frameworks (Spark, Hadoop).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS) and CI/CD tools.
  • Knowledge of AI/ML data modeling or graph databases (Neo4J).
  • Affinity with structural biology or bioinformatics.
