Lab Analyst

TL;DR

Lab Analyst (Materials Testing): Execute comprehensive materials and product testing in the Paperboard TAPPI Lab to support problem-solving and product development for paperboard packaging lines with an accent on developing and validating testing methods, interpreting results, and ensuring full-package “fit for use” standards. Focus on root cause analysis, statistical data analysis, and clear technical reporting to stakeholders while managing lab SOPs and innovation lab activities.

What you will do

• Plan and execute materials and product testing for paperboard and related packaging materials according to established protocols and standards.
• Collaborate with Product Development Engineers to clarify testing needs, define problem statements, recommend test methodologies, and analyze results within project timelines.
• Operate and maintain TAPPI lab equipment (e.g., Instron, COF tester, smoothness meter, deflection apparatus, moisture analyzers).
• Investigate performance inconsistencies using root cause analysis, recommend corrective actions, and run follow-up experiments to ensure reliability and accuracy.
• Develop and validate new testing methods for novel or unique product challenges.
• Document and communicate findings using the Lab Evaluation Database through reports, graphs, and presentations; manage SOPs and coordinate external labs when needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Material Science, or a related scientific field, or an Associate’s degree with significant relevant industry experience.
• Minimum 2 years of laboratory experience in an R&D function using analytical and problem-solving skills; at least 2 years in a TAPPI lab or similar environment preferred.
• Working knowledge of statistical process analysis and experimental design.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills to present technical data clearly.
• Strong ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
