What you will do

• Design, build, align, and calibrate novel optical analytical instruments from concept to validation.
• Solve complex optical and mechanical design challenges through rapid prototyping.
• Integrate optics with detectors, light sources, motion control, electronics, and software.
• Plan and execute experiments to troubleshoot and optimize system performance.
• Serve as the in-house subject-matter expert for spectroscopy and experimental methodology.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure instruments meet biological and regulatory standards.

Requirements

• Must be based in London, UK
• Advanced degree (PhD or exceptional MSc) in Physics, Optics, Photonics, or related field.
• 3+ years of industry experience building complex optical systems in a lab environment.
• Deep practical knowledge of Raman, FTIR, fluorescence, or scattering instrumentation.
• Strong hands-on skills in opto-mechanics, precision alignment, and stray-light control.
• Experience with data acquisition and control using Python, Matlab, C++, or LabVIEW.

Nice to have

• Proficiency in optical and mechanical CAD tools like Zemax or SolidWorks.
• Experience maturing prototypes toward production and DfX.
• Knowledge of fiber optics, microfluidics, or laser safety.
