Backend Engineer (AI)

Backend Engineer (TypeScript/Node.js): Building and optimizing high-performance voice AI pipelines with an accent on real-time streaming, backpressure management, and system stability. Location: Hybrid in San Francisco

What you will do

• Own the stability and pluggability of the StreamModule pipeline (VAD → STT → LLM → TTS → Transport).
• Consolidate messaging infrastructure by migrating from BullMQ to Kafka.
• Harden provider abstractions to allow new models and providers to be added without altering core systems.
• Implement event-driven OpenTelemetry (OTEL) tracing across the pipeline.
• Resolve Postgres performance bottlenecks and single points of failure (SPOFs) to improve system reliability.

Requirements

• Experience building real-time or streaming systems (media pipelines, event-driven backends) in production.
• Strong expertise in queue architectures such as BullMQ, Kafka, or Temporal.
• Experience designing plugin or adapter architectures with decoupled implementations.
• Proven track record of operating Postgres at scale, including connection pooling and read replicas.
• Proficiency in system instrumentation using OpenTelemetry.
• Must be based in or able to work hybrid in San Francisco.

• Experience with TypeScript, Node.js, and NestJS.
