Backend Software Engineer (Maps & Routing)

TL;DR

Backend Software Engineer (C++/Rust): Building the ground routing infrastructure for a military logistics command and control platform with an accent on routing engines, cost functions, and graph structures. Focus on designing and implementing new routing capabilities on top of Valhalla to support tactical sustainment in degraded environments.

What you will do

• Own the design, development, and maintenance of the routing layer built on Valhalla as the sole responsible engineer.
• Extend routing capabilities to include multi-modal transport and time-dependent cost modeling.
• Collaborate with the platform team to expose routing functionality through clean APIs.
• Participate in technical design discussions and code reviews to maintain engineering rigor.
• Triage and debug production routing issues to ensure reliability at the tactical edge.
• Partner with military stakeholders to ensure software meets real-world sustainment requirements.

Requirements

• 4–6 years of software engineering experience focused on routing, navigation, or transportation systems.
• Direct hands-on experience building or extending routing engines like Valhalla, OSRM, or Graphhopper.
• Proficiency in C++ or Rust as a primary language.
• Ability to independently design, implement, and iterate on a technical layer.
• Must be based in or able to work on-site in Rosslyn, VA or New York City.

Nice to have

• Direct experience with Valhalla.
• Experience with multi-modal transport routing (ground, air, maritime).
• Background in logistics, mapping, or supply chain technology.
• Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, OpenStreetMap data pipelines, PostGIS, or tile servers.
