Principal Data Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid, Livingston Watermark, UK; two days in the office per week

What you will do

• Provide technical leadership and mentorship for engineers working cross-functionally in an agile environment.
• Define and guide architecture for complex, high-impact data products and platforms.
• Establish engineering patterns, coding standards, architectural practices, and quality expectations across multiple squads.
• Translate business and technical requirements into scalable, cloud-native, cloud-agnostic, AI-ready data solutions and CI/CD frameworks.
• Lead data validation, profiling, reconciliation, automated testing, monitoring, observability, and performance optimization.
• Shape platform roadmaps with architects, product leaders, senior stakeholders, and Principal Engineer peers.

Requirements

• Deep expertise in cloud data engineering, distributed processing, and enterprise-scale data architecture.
• Strong knowledge of GCP, AWS, or Azure, plus Python and/or Node.js and CI/CD, ideally with Jenkins.
• Master-level SQL skills, ideally with BigQuery, including query optimization and performance tuning.
• Experience designing scalable data models and semantic layers, performing data profiling, anomaly detection, and statistical analysis.
• Expertise in data quality frameworks, governance standards, secure handling of sensitive data, coding standards, and peer code reviews.

• Experience designing, building, or integrating AI-powered and agentic solutions into enterprise platforms.
• Understanding of autonomous workflows, LLM-based applications, orchestration frameworks, and secure operation at scale.
