TL;DR

Principal Programmer (Gamedev): Owning and delivering large-scale, complex technical systems for AAA game projects with an accent on C++ development and engine-level architecture. Focus on solving high-level programming challenges across PC and consoles while mentoring team members and collaborating with global clients.

Location: Must be based in the UK and able to work from the Daresbury or Newcastle studio on a hybrid basis (3 days per week in-office).

What you will do

  • Research, own, and implement large-scale systems autonomously and within a team.
  • Tackle the most complex programming tasks and bugs across PC and console platforms.
  • Collaborate with multiple disciplines and global clients to deliver high-standard work on time.
  • Provide technical leadership and support to less experienced engineers through code reviews and mentoring.
  • Act as a technical point of contact for small projects or sub-teams.
  • Write detailed technical plans, schedules, and documentation.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional experience in game development.
  • Expertise in C++ and experience with commercial or bespoke game engines.
  • Proven track record of developing large-scale systems (e.g., animation, gameplay, UI, physics, networking).
  • Must be based in the UK and able to work on-site 3 days per week.
  • Strong communication skills for discussing technical details with non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work autonomously and proactively in a hybrid environment.

Nice to have

  • Experience with render tech or low-level console development.
  • Background in porting games or full development cycle experience.
  • Previous experience in small team or sub-team leadership.
  • Experience with tools development and build infrastructure.
