Staff Software Engineer (Developer Experience)

What you will do

• Lead technical strategy for platforms and workflows to improve developer productivity and satisfaction across GM.
• Design and implement golden paths for shipping software, covering CI/CD, testing, security, observability, and deployment.
• Build automation and self-service capabilities for environment provisioning, pipeline setup, and guardrail enforcement.
• Embed AI agents and copilots into engineering workflows to assist with planning, coding, testing, and operations.
• Define and track outcome-focused metrics such as lead time for changes, PR cycle time, and change failure rate.
• Act as a multiplier and mentor, coaching engineers on software engineering and AI-assisted development.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software development.
• Proficiency in Java, Go, C#, Python, or TypeScript and experience building distributed systems in production.
• Deep expertise in designing and operating modern CI/CD pipelines and release processes.
• Solid understanding of at least one major cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep).
• Understanding of security, compliance, and governance for developer platforms (RBAC, auditability).
• Must be based in the US; GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

Nice to have

• Experience in platform engineering, SRE, or internal developer platforms.
• Background in large, regulated, or safety-critical environments.
• Prior experience working within a dedicated Developer Experience or DevTools organization.
