Staff Software Engineer (Fullstack/SRE)

What you will do

• Lead and execute technical roadmaps for new projects with high autonomy and minimal oversight.
• Diagnose and resolve complex production issues within a Ruby on Rails monolith and Sidekiq background jobs.
• Develop and maintain observability dashboards and alerts using DataDog and Dynatrace.
• Participate in a monthly "The Watch" on-call rotation to ensure system stability and reliability.
• Write and review code for observability improvements and bug fixes using Ruby on Rails, SvelteKit, and Python.
• Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to provide guidance on reliability and performance best practices.

Requirements

• Must be based in the United States.
• 9+ years of engineering experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
• 3+ years of production experience with backend web development, with a strong preference for Ruby on Rails.
• Experience with background job processing frameworks such as Sidekiq or Celery.
• Proven experience with APM tools, specifically DataDog and/or Dynatrace.
• Proficiency with at least one modern JavaScript framework (React, Angular, Vue, or Svelte).

Nice to have

• Experience with vets-api or the VA/OCTO environment.
• Python experience for scripting, API interactions, and ETL/data engineering.
• General understanding of DevOps concepts including containerization, virtualization, and networking.
• Familiarity with GitHub Actions and the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS).
