Director, System Safety (Autonomous Vehicles)

What you will do

• Lead multidisciplinary teams across systems, test execution, safety risk, and Safety Management System processes.
• Drive the Driver-Out gated deployment plan with ride-hail partners, including safety onsites, internal gates, and go/no-go recommendation packages.
• Own the L4 Safety Case Framework covering HARA, FTA, FMEA, runtime monitoring, and ML-aware safety analysis.
• Build and operationalize the Safety Management System, including incident risk assessment, risk register automation, recall response, safety testing, and competency tracking.
• Define safety architecture with Autonomy, Validation, and Hardware teams, including runtime monitoring, ODD enforcement, and Driver-Anomaly response systems.
• Execute the L4 Japan compliance plan, engage regulators and partners, represent technical safety positions, and hire and develop safety leaders.

Requirements

• 8+ years in product or system safety engineering, including 3+ years on L3+ autonomous-vehicle or comparable safety-critical programs in aviation, rail, robotics, or related fields.
• BA/BS in engineering, computer science, or a related technical field; advanced degree preferred.
• Direct authorship of safety-case work products such as HARA, FTA, FMEA, and safety-case construction for a shipping vehicle or equivalent cyber-physical system.
• Hands-on contribution to at least one driverless or Driver-Out commercial deployment milestone, including authorship of the safety recommendation.
• 3+ years managing engineers, including management of a manager or leadership of senior individual contributors with readiness to become a manager of managers.
• Experience working with NHTSA, FMCSA, FTA, state DMVs, MLIT, or international regulators, directly or with an executive sponsor.
• Knowledge of ML-driven safety standards ISO 21448 SOTIF and ISO 8800; traditional functional safety knowledge including ISO 26262 is preferred.
• Experience in automotive, autonomous vehicles, aerospace, or another regulated safety-critical industry, preferably at an AV or AI-driving company with an ML-heavy autonomy stack.
• Experience building safety arguments for learned components, using telemetry or simulation data to influence safety roadmaps, and defining runtime monitors, safety KPIs, guardrails, or uncertainty-quantification strategies.
• Experience building or expanding an SMS, including incident investigation, near-miss reporting, risk registers, or recall processes; startup or small-business experience is required as a demonstrated ability to operate with minimal resources.
• Strong communication and executive-level influence skills; ability to undergo a driving record check.

Nice to have

• Published safety-assurance framework or runtime-monitoring methodology for learned components.
• Familiarity with the safety-cybersecurity intersection, including ISO/SAE 21434 and NHTSA Cybersecurity Best Practices.
• Technical credibility with safety-relevant C++ or Python, Jupyter, Databricks, Power BI, and AI-assisted operational-data analysis within the last 24 months.
• Advanced degree in a relevant technical field.
