TL;DR
Lead Clinical Terminologist (Healthcare Standards): Providing authoritative leadership in developing, implementing, and maintaining medical terminologies like SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, and FHIR for VA and DoD systems with an accent on enterprise-wide strategy, semantic infrastructure, and interoperability. Focus on curating value sets, ontologies, mapping clinical data, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards while advising on large-scale health IT initiatives.
Location: Full-time remote (USA; U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain federal security clearance required)
Salary: $175,000 - $200,000 a year

What you will do
- Lead enterprise terminology activities, supervise resources, and ensure quality adherence to best practices and standards.
- Develop, review, and verify clinical terminology specifications for VA, DoD, and partners; recommend standards like SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, FHIR.
- Direct mappings, terminology modeling, value sets, and information models across clinical domains.
- Architect and manage semantic infrastructure, ontologies, and terminology tooling for scalable clinical data assets.
- Consult VHA programs, EHR Modernization, and partners on requirements, planning, and evaluations.
- Analyze terminologies, propose solutions, and ensure regulatory compliance.
Requirements
- Master’s degree or higher in nursing, health informatics, pharmacy, medicine, or equivalent (8 years relevant experience may substitute).
- Minimum 10 years experience in clinical terminology development, mapping, and implementation.
- In-depth experience with SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, FHIR mapping and modeling.
- Expertise in designing, building, updating value sets, ontologies, and terminology tooling.
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain/maintain federal security clearance (Public Trust or higher).
- Strong knowledge of policies, regulations for clinical standards; experience leading multidisciplinary teams.
- Outstanding communication and ability to articulate complex terminology issues.
Nice to have
- Doctorate (PhD, MD, PharmD) in clinical or informatics field.
- Clinical licensure as physician, nurse, pharmacist, or allied health professional.
- National/international recognition in clinical terminology standards.
- Experience with VA, DoD, ONC federal initiatives.
- Publications, teaching, or standards committee involvement.
- Knowledge of interoperability standards like 21st Century Cures Act and VHA policies.
