EHS Leader (AI)

Location: Menlo Park, California, United States; on-site

Salary: $250,000–$325,000 annually plus equity

What you will do

• Lead the site EH&S team, strengthen the safety and environmental culture, and support laboratory and operations teams with day-to-day safety challenges.
• Build the digital EHS infrastructure covering inspections, training records, incident reporting, compliance tracking, KPI dashboards, action items, and audits.
• Own permitting with local, state, and federal agencies, including hazardous materials, air permits, fire department/CUPA processes, and hazardous waste coordination.
• Maintain chemical inventories, SDS systems, hazard labeling, HazCom training, inspections, and documentation for powder and thin-film laboratories.
• Design and review life safety systems, gas detection, emergency stops, interlocks, alarms, emissions controls, and waste-abatement systems.
• Lead HAZOPs, PHA/FMEA, PSSRs, commissioning validation, equipment inspections, and autonomous laboratory safety programs while partnering with automation, controls, and AI/ML teams.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in EHS, process safety, or chemical operations in laboratories, pilot plants, or manufacturing environments.
• Strong knowledge of EHS regulations, standards, and best practices, including OSHA, CalEPA, and applicable permitting requirements.
• Hands-on experience with HAZOPs or FMEAs and the design or review of functional safety systems.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Ability to work on-site in Menlo Park in a high-complexity laboratory operating 24/7.
• Experience with autonomous or semi-autonomous laboratory environments, new facility build-outs, permitting, and safety system design.

Nice to have

• EHS certification such as Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist.
• Familiarity with AI or ML tools for risk assessment, safety documentation, or experimental planning.
• Participation in technical committees contributing to OSHA, NFPA, or IEC standards.
• Recognized accomplishments in the field.
