TL;DR

Intern, Electricity Market Optimization & Price Forecasting (Data Science): Developing and refining optimization and time-series forecasting models for utility-scale energy storage dispatch in competitive electricity markets with an accent on stochastic and mixed-integer programming. Focus on implementing trading strategies and optimizing physical/financial positions in CAISO and ERCOT markets.

Location: Remote (Must be based in the US)

Salary: $30 - $35 per hour

What you will do

  • Develop and refine optimization models for energy storage dispatch incorporating CAISO and ERCOT market rules.
  • Formulate stochastic, robust, or mixed-integer programming models to optimize physical and financial trading positions.
  • Enhance time-series forecasting models for electricity prices using modern ML and statistical approaches.
  • Implement and backtest alternative dispatch and trading strategies using historical market data and simulation frameworks.
  • Document model assumptions, methodologies, and results to support knowledge transfer and team review.

Requirements

  • Pursuing an MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Strong background in optimization methods (mixed-integer, stochastic) or time-series forecasting applied to energy systems.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Familiarity with optimization solvers (Gurobi, CPLEX, CBC) or ML frameworks (XGBoost, scikit-learn, PyTorch).
  • Solid understanding of electricity market fundamentals, including energy markets, ancillary services, and LMPs.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check and E-Verify.
