Staff Backend Engineer (Fintech)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco or New York City, with three days per week in the office

Salary: $220,000–$240,000 per year, plus equity

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain backend services that process high volumes of data across complex employment-system integrations.
• Drive product reliability, integration expansion, data coverage, and development in new product verticals.
• Lead initiatives across product, engineering, and support teams from problem definition and scoping through delivery.
• Influence architectural practices and organizational direction while mentoring engineers and leading by example.
• Build scalable, testable, and maintainable systems, deploy code daily, and debug issues across the stack using observability tools.

Requirements

• 10+ years of relevant backend development experience in a high-growth environment.
• Strong experience with APIs, backend technologies, system design, and distributed systems.
• Experience with NodeJS, PostgreSQL, Redis, data tools, and ETL/ELT processes.
• Knowledge of API authentication and authorization methods, particularly OAuth, plus experience with cloud providers.
• Strong testing knowledge and best practices; test-driven development is strongly encouraged.
• Experience delivering ambiguous, large-scale initiatives and collaborating across teams while mentoring engineers.
